Banjo heads – CHOOSING THE CORRECT SIZE:

A plastic "skin" (referred to as a "head") comes attached to an aluminium ring (which determines its size – measured in inches).

These are ways to find the correct size for your banjo.

  • If you are replacing a plastic head that is already your on banjo it might have an ID number written in ink on the ring, or on a small paper label. It might have the ID code such as 1100H1, which means 11" and no 16ths, high crown, frosted top (each surface finish has a number 1 to 6 – see below).
  • send the head to us and we can match it
  • ask us if we know which fits a your particular make of banjo;
  • measure it when it is off the banjo – find the inside diameter of the aluminium ring
  • measure it on the banjo – with a rectractable steel tape with a lip, measure the O.D. of tone ring or rim (this is the O.D. of the white head you can see)
  • For crown height, measure the depth of the tension hoop. But there may be other factors: such as an archtop tone ring banjo can take a low or medium crown even if the tension hoop is deep. Crown heights (just the plastic part not including the ring) are low 3/8"; medium 7/16"; high ½".

REMO banjo head ID code: 1015H5 means 10&15/16, high crown, fiberskyn. To choose a surface finish or texture/colour – see the pictures shown as links in the listings
